Hot Christmas, Rainy New Year and lots of 24!

Finally!!! Since Christmas, we have been watching 24, season 2 on DVD and we just finished the series yesterday. “24” Is an American series that tells the story of Jack Bauer, an agent working for the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) who deals with major terrorist threats in the US. In season 2, for example, there is the threat of a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles and Jack and the rest of CTU try to find out where the bomb is and who did it. The show is in “real time”, so every 1-hour episode represents one hour in the story. The creaters of the story managed to make the series incredible gripping so you do not only sit on the edge of your seat during the whole show, but you also cannot stop watching it. We just finished watching the whole series yesterday, watching 1-4 episodes a day for the last week or so! We bought ourselves a projector for Christmas, so it was quite entertaining to watch the show on a big screen (2.5mx1.5m!).

It was an odd Christmas this year. It was the first time we were in the Southern hemisphere for this holiday and it is amazing how the completely different weather influences the holiday. I worked on December 24th and we went and visited John, the company’s MD in the evening. On the 25th, with sunny weather and temperatures around 30 degrees, we relaxed, spent a lot of time in the pool and watched 24!

The weather with new year, and several days afterwards, was miserable – grey, windy and rainy with temperatures around 20 degrees. We stayed home on new years eve and … watched 24. On January 1st we visited some friends and watched some more 24!

Kariega … the pictures

Kariega Album

Kariega Album

A few weeks ago, we had a business meeting at Kariega game park. The meeting was very productive, but we we also found some time for a game drive and a river cruise. Click on the image or here to see the pictures. The first page or so are mainly people pictures. On the next few pages you find some great pictures of the wildlife we saw.

We have crabs!

Its been raining for the past 2 days. It was hot and very humid all weekend, we spent a lot of time in the pool. Then the rain came.

Officialy, we got 63mm (about 2.5 inches) of rain in the past 24 hours. Its not clear if that includes the heavy downpoor today. This is about the same as the average rainfall here in the entire month of December.

I found a strange wet place in the bedroom. No sign of where water came in, no window was near, no ceiling leak, no wall leak. Shelves above are dry. But one shelf got wet, and there is a bit of water standing below.

I went out to look for where it could have come from. There is some leakage in the covered area outside the guest flat. Nothing major. Then I walked towards the pool.

The pool is overflowing. A good wind puts a small amount of the water onto the deck. We had LOTS of rain! But behold, here on the steps going up to the guest flat, is a crab.

I went and got the camera. The landlord had said they found a crab once. Coming back, I found a 2nd crab, a bit smaller, but further up the walk! I can’t imagine WHERE they think they are going, or why. We are about 45 meters (yards) above sea level. The beach is about 1 mile away (1.5 kilometers). The estuary is much closer, but just as far down. I know nothing of crab behavior, but this strikes me as weird.

The ‘house tour’ project is coming along. Should be ready within a week!

Settling in

Yesterday was quite hot and humid ’til late afternoon, when clouds returned. This morning its again cloudy, and much more pleasant. There has been some light rain.

We get mixed reports about what the weather will be like. We’ve been told that 30c is about as warm as it gets. We’ve been told that hot and humid is normal and unusual. It seems that everyone agrees summer is the rainy season. We’ll have to wait and see.

It’s now been 3 weeks since I bought the scooter. The dealer, “Marine and Bike”, has not yet delivered my plates and registration, for which I paid an additional 300 Rand. Someone has told me that businesses here are bad at delivering after payment. I’ve had two deliver as promised, and two that have been late or, so far, failed. I will have to call them. They were also supposed to locate an open-face helmet in size XXL. They may have dropped the ball on both counts and need reminding. Nice thing with my home insurance here, it comes with legal services, so I can get a lawyer to write them without having to pay, should that be needed. Of course I’ll also complain to Honda, whom I would expect to prefer honest dealers.

I hope now to keep this blog reasonably up-to-date. The ADSL line is installed and the ‘house tour’ project is nearly complete. I was trying to wait to finish that before dealing with blog entries, but it just got too long. Unpacking is almost finished! The maid starts here tomorrow. Now I need to find a gardener, preferably one who knows his business, else I’ll have to find someone else who can tell me, so I can instruct the gardener. It is typical here that a ‘gardener’ is an unskilled worker that can’t do anything else. I just hope he doesn’t call me ‘boss’, as I won’t call him ‘boy’!

November 28 Monkeys!

We were told there were monkeys about. We had grown skeptical, yet more sources agreed. Then finally this day I happened to glance across the valley and see one on someone’s roof.

As we watched, more appeared in the tree adjacent to the roof, and they came out to gather there. The weather has been quite wet for a couple days, with heavy mist and drizzle. I figure the monkeys wanted to dry out while the rain had stopped.

November 25 Thanksgiving

For reasons unknown, I decided to do a Thanksgiving dinner this year. I haven’t bothered with it for a number of years, largely because I can’t get some of what are, for me, essential items (especially winter squash). But there are some squash common here, although not my favorite. So we had a lovely meal which I served on the patio.

Seriously, the ‘season’ of the year is confusing. Christmas decorations look blizzards in hot weather! They are, except for religious ones, symbols of winter solstice. But its coming on summer here! It is amusing that the old pagan seasonal observations, adapted to Christianity, fail so miserably south of the equator.

November 24 Gecko

There are geckos out at night. These are nearly the color of the house, and we wonder if they might change colors. They come out as dusk starts and we see them mostly on the house. I’d like to get better photos! It requires both of us as a flashlight must be aimed before the camera will focus. Exactly which sort of gecko this is, I can’t say. They are identified mainly by their toes, and the geckos won’t let me play with their feet!

November 21 Thumbnail skink

The place is crawling with the little lizards called skinks. There are a number of species with different markings and colors. But this little fellow I spotted crawling on the wall of the patio. I was amazed by his size, and actually got him to walk onto my hand. I got Johan busy with the camera while I kept control of the skink.

November 18 Safari

Johan went away a couple days for a training conference, held at a game park a couple hours drive away. He took some nice photos which include elephants and lions. He’ll be posting his favorites soon!

Guess what I did? I unpacked! Weee!
